Is accredited curriculum required?
Maryland’s home instruction framework does not require parents to purchase an accredited curriculum. COMAR sets out home instruction requirements, and MSDE explains that parents choose the curriculum and instructional materials.
This does not remove notification or supervision responsibilities. It means an accreditation label is not the starting test for whether a family can use a learning resource.
Check what the accreditation claim covers
A provider’s statement may refer to a school or institution rather than every product it sells. Ask which organization granted accreditation, what entity or program is covered, whether the status is current, and where the claim can be verified.
Also ask what you are buying: access to lessons, enrollment in a school, teacher-led courses, grading services, or a diploma program. These arrangements are different even when advertising uses similar language.
Accreditation and oversight serve different purposes
Accreditation does not automatically arrange Maryland homeschool supervision. Families need to establish which supervision route applies to their situation and whether a particular school enrollment changes that status.
Likewise, an entity’s registration to supervise home instruction is not an accreditation award. Treat those as separate questions when comparing programs.
Think ahead about transfer and admission
A receiving school, college, training program, or other organization may have its own documentation and acceptance policies. Before making a major purchase for a future transition, ask the receiving institution what it will require.
Keep course descriptions, evidence of work, completion information, and academic records. An accreditation claim alone should not be treated as a guarantee that a future institution will accept a course or credential.
Choose with a clear purpose
- What does the learner need from this resource?
- Is the product curriculum access or school enrollment?
- What exactly is accredited, and by whom?
- How will Maryland supervision be handled?
- What records might a future institution request?
