Begin with the state’s parent resources

The Florida Department of Education publishes parent home education resources and links to district contacts, statutes, FAQs, and sample documents. Use those resources to understand the arrangement being established.

Understand the district’s role

Florida’s parent resource page describes filing a letter of intent with the district of residence, submitting annual evaluations, and filing a termination letter when the home education program ends.

Consult the current statutes and FAQs for the full requirements, timing, records, and accepted evaluation options. Other educational arrangements may operate differently; confirm which route applies before filing.

Organize the year before it becomes busy

Keep district correspondence and confirmation records together. Note the evaluation arrangements and deadlines that apply, and understand any portfolio and retention responsibilities under the chosen route.

Ask about the process when moving, transferring, or ending a program so that important records and notifications are not overlooked.

Questions to bring to the planning stage

  • Which home education or other educational arrangement is being used?
  • Where should the initial notice be submitted?
  • What records and annual evaluation arrangements apply?
  • What changes when the family moves or ends the program?
  • How will the chosen curriculum, classes, or co-op fit the weekly routine?

Compare learning resources by fit

Check lesson samples, adult involvement, pacing, access periods, and cancellation terms. Keep the educational plan distinct from administrative paperwork, while making time for both.
